20/20 Vision: Future Planning for the Academic Success of International Students

Research shows that international students have a difficult transition into universities; their needs are unique and involve not just the issue of using a second language to navigate the academic world but they must also learn how to integrate into the social, cultural and multidimensional educational system in the United States. IEPs need to serve as a bridge – a transition period during which students acquire English language skills, the requirements and expectations of academia, and the intercultural nuances of the American university. This presentation demonstrates how we can use research to inform future planning by revealing the appropriate tools and support structures necessary to equip students with the intercultural skills needed for success in academic, linguistic and multiple settings. It also highlights how IEPs and host/partner institutions can establish productive dialogue and collaborative mechanisms to provide ESL students with enriched campus integration opportunities.
