16 Keys to Teaching ESL Grammar and Vocabulary - TIME & ROOM CHANGE

This session uses corpus linguistics data to examine not only which grammar points should be taught but which vocabulary should be taught with each key grammar point. Sample lessons for teaching vocabulary with grammar and tips for designing and teaching these activities will be presented.

Student Photos as Writing Prompts: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
The presenters share four lessons showing how students’ own smartphone photos got them writing. Tasks varied from descriptive to analytical writing and yielded surprisingly strong results. Students wrote authentic pieces which demonstrated improved vocabulary and structure—not to mention pride in performance. Lesson plans and examples will be shared.

Grammar for an Academic Head Start
Novice students use translation as an L2 learning strategy which produces writing in alignment with their L1. Explicit grammar lessons, however, have marginal effect on students' habits of mind.
