CATESOL Service-Learning Workshop
Service-learning enhances CATESOL teachers’ understanding of ELLs, language learning theories and practices, and local communities. This CATESOL service-learning workshop provides lesson plans, activities, materials, and assessment tools for community-based civic engagement learning activities for ESL and EFL learners. The presenter will provide participants as much "hands-on" experience as possible. Participants will be guided to work in groups and identify community partners in their area to conceptualize a plan for how they might implement or incorporate service-learning at their school or in their program. Participants will be encouraged to draft a proposal for their administration and list what they think would be the benefits and logistical considerations. Potential discussion points such as legalities and insurance waivers may be prioritized.

Enhancing L2 Reading and Writing Instruction with Genre-Based Tools
As literacy practices in school, the workplace, and social media have rapidly evolved, L2 literacy educators have increasingly recognized the need to prepare learners to navigate dynamic print and digital literacies. At the same time, L2 educators face ongoing pressure to equip ELLs with the reading and composing skills necessary for mastering traditional, school-based genres. This workshop will acquaint participants with classroom materials and tasks designed to cultivate ELLs’ strategies for identifying, analyzing, and reproducing divergent high- and low-stakes genres in diverse literate environments. Session activities will feature tools for facilitating intensive reading instruction, maximizing reading-writing connections, vocabulary building, and guiding the production of authentic print and digital texts. Following a selection of collaborative tasks, participants will be invited to share ideas for adapting genre- based tools for effective reading and writing instruction in their settings.

This interactive presentation will provide teachers with resources to understand and apply key research-based instructional practices around integrated literacy (reading, writing, and academic oral language) for language learners.  Participants will explore high-leverage strategies to support (1) teaching genre writing as a process, (2) building on students’ backgrounds, (3) modeling writing for and with students, (4) developing academic oral language, (5) teaching grammar and vocabulary, and (6) publishing (and celebrating!) student writing.

Using Film to Link Languages and Cultures
“Little has been done in the utilization of moving pictures in the teaching of foreign languages, but the moving-picture industry in this country [USA] has made our students so familiar with films for entertainment that the adaptation of their use to another field would be simple.” As it turns out, it was not so simple. But those were the assumptions and expectations expressed by W.S. Hendrix, in 1939, in his article entitled ‘Films in the Learning of Foreign Languages’ in The Journal of Higher Education. In this workshop, we will, then, look at where we are nearly 80 years after Hendrix’s claim, and see how film cans be used to make more explicit the links between Language and Culture, in ways that print-media, such as traditional textbooks, cannot.
